A huge favorite September 29, 2009 Patti Byrd 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a wonderfully entertaining guide to good writing. My favorite chapter is "The Living Dead," in which O'Conner dedicates tombstones to "bogus or worn-out rules" such as the bans on splitting infinitives or ending sentences with a preposition. This book is full of good pointers for learning to say what you mean to say, in a way that other people can understand.
The absolute best ! ! ! September 28, 2009 YA writer Patricia T. O'Conner has done it again! Her extremely clear, no jargon, friendly, and fun approach has made Woe Is I a favorite grammar book for a long time. Those of us who have it can attest to its dog-eared condition due to frequent consultation. Dog eared or not, why buy a new edition of the book when so-called revised editions typically have a new chapter or two, maybe a new preface or introduction, and a slightly different cover? Because Ms. O'Conner does not disappoint and she ensures that grammarphobes and grammar-lovers alike will find plenty of new material in this outstanding third edition. It's quite clear from the first few pages that she has truly revised the entire book: rewriting, clarifying, adding examples, touching on new topics. As well, she keeps it all very up to date, discussing usage that used to be considered incorrect, but has now become accepted. She says that she views language as evolving, not absolute, and she proves it by letting us know which no-nos are now OKs. Highly recommended for teachers, students, readers, writers, editors, and self-appointed grammar police. Hard as it may be to believe, this is one -- probably the only -- grammar book that is a pleasure to read.
keeping us all up to date September 28, 2009 G. G. Urban (New Jersey) With this new edition of her classic WOE IS I, Ms. O'Conner updates us with the latest on the state of the English language and good usage. Her examples - as ever - are both witty and timely. Using a voice of wry humor, she guides us through the labyrinth of today's English, in plain English, with a pleasant lack of pretension and finger wagging.
Buy it,you'll like it...better yet, you'll find yourself using it again and again.
Like a visit from an old friend September 28, 2009 Michael Sniffen What a treat! A third edition of ``Woe Is I" so chock full of updates and new material it's like a whole new book. This is like a visit from a dear old friend or a new installment of your favorite soap opera. And as before, it's also like eating potato chips, once you start reading it's very, very hard to put down. A living language requires a lively maven to keep up with it, and Pat O'Conner has filled that role with this new volume.
Great! September 28, 2009 SwanSigh (AZ, USA) A rare new edition that actually includes new information, and it's still as witty and charming as ever!
